At least two lawsuits [circa 2004] are proceeding against the Bush Administration charging complicity in the events of 9-11.Stanley Hilton ["A graduate of Duke Law School, he was a classmate to independent prosecutor Kenneth Starr. In 1979 and 1980, he worked as a Senate aide/counsel to Senator Robert Dole in Washington, D.C. A member of the California State Bar since 1975, Hilton practices law in San Francisco."], an expert on government sponsored terrorism, stated, "We filed the lawsuit [for seven billion dollars . . . He represents the families of fourteen victims. Four hundred plaintiffs are involved nationwide. . . . Philadelphia -- January 6, 2004 (TomFlocco.com) -- On Friday, Philip J. Berg, attorney for 9-11 widow Ellen Mariani in her Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) suit seeking to hold President Bush and various government officials accountable for the September 11 attacks, served Bush and top officials in his Administration with a personal summons, the original complaint and the first amended complaint via a federal process server, as required by the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.
Among those served besides the President, were Vice-President Richard Cheney, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Attorney General John Ashcroft, Central Intelligence Agency Director George Tenet, National Security Advisor Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta, 9-11 Congressional Victim Compensation Fund Special Master Kenneth Feinberg, former Iraqi Dictator Saddam Hussein, Zacarias Moussaoui, and former President George H.W. Bush.
The legal documents were also filed at the Philadelphia office of United States Attorney Patrick Meehan, former Republican District Attorney from Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
Berg told TomFlocco.com "the multiple summonses and complaints were filed last week in Philadelphia; and they require an answer within 60 days," adding "we feel confident that we'll be successful, and that the evidence in this case is so strong, it will lead to the end of the Bush presidency."
Berg also told us "we're currently preparing written interrogatories and subpoenas so that we'll be able to keep the discovery of evidence and multiple investigations moving forward at a reasonable pace."
For her part, plaintiff Ellen Mariani told us last night that "There was ample warning of these attacks; and now I hear from news reports that Condoleezza Rice doesn't want to testify publicly under oath about all the intelligence briefings which warned about planes flying into buildings. What does she have to hide?"
The widow continued, "Our Congress created new laws to protect themselves, the White House and the insurance corporations. Insurance lobbyists even talked to representatives and senators on the afternoon of the attacks."
And then Mr. Ashcroft's lawyers stalled the New York City airline and airport security lawsuits and investigations to force destitute victim families into the Federal Compensation Fund. There have been terrible crimes and criminals in United States history -- but because the Bush family has passed their misdeeds down through generations, they are unequivocally the most corrupt. Rarely has there been a whole family of underhanded criminals where nefariousness was the rule rather than the exception. It's not as if they have no code of conduct, the facts prove they lie, cheat, and steal as their code of conduct.
Prescott Bush was a firm believer in eugenics (the study of genetic improvement through selecting parents, or racial superiority), which was very common among the influential families at the start of the twentieth century -- of course we are all more familiar with the eugenics "studies" done by the Nazis. William E. Dodd, U.S. Ambassador to Germany in 1937, said, "I have had plenty of opportunity in my post in Berlin to witness how close some of our American ruling families are to the Nazi Regime." Which "ruling families" was he referring to? Well, Old Prescott was convicted by the U.S. government under the Trading With The Enemy Act in 1942 and fined one million dollars. Brown Brothers, Harriman's affiliate Union Bank -- of which Prescott was director -- invested huge sums of money into Thyssen Steel, the backbone of Nazi steel production.
August Thyssen, an affluent German industrialist, lost much of his empire to the harsh Treaty of Versailles after WWI. Vowing this would never happen again, he founded three banks in three countries: August Thyssen Bank in Berlin, Bank voor Handel en Scheepuaart in Rotterdam, Holland, and Union Banking Corp. in New York City. Using money channeled through these three banks, Thyssen financed the rise of the Nazi party and their front-man Adolf Hitler, ruled Nazi steel production, profited from the mining of coal by Jewish slaves, and financed concentration camps including Auschwitz. In 1937, while director of Union Bank, Prescott hired Allen Dulles to "cloak" his accounts; Allen obviously didn't do that great of a job because in 1942 the U.S. Alien Property Custodian froze Union Bank's accounts. "Coincidentally," Allen Dulles was appointed U.S. Intelligence Chief in post-war Germany while he was also the lawyer representing Thyssen's bank in Holland. This ensuing cover-up may have saved Prescott from further penalty stemming from proper investigation. In 1951, Prescott reclaimed Union Bank from the U.S. Alien Property Custodian, and went on to represent Connecticut in the Senate.
Why is it that picking up a gun and firing upon U.S. troops in wartime is considered treason, but financing the production of thousands of guns, munitions, tanks, and aircraft is not considered a treasonous act? Well, since you weren't convicted by our government, I'll convict you with my words: you, Prescott, were guilty in your lifetime of treason against the United States and your tomb bears the blood of veterans who died fighting the Nazis.
So Prescott had a son, and named him George -- he became president of the United States -- but first he became a vile criminal. Let's not even speak of the Iran-Contra scandal or his membership in the Nixon Administration during Watergate. Let's skip the fact that he was ambassador to the U.N. in the seventies, then, during his presidency, he scandalously pledged his support for the establishment of a "New World Order." "Coincidentally," when the Taliban and Saddam Hussein were trained, funded, and empowered -- Bush was director of the CIA and Vice President. These are all common crimes in comparison to the Bushes malevolent standard -- let's instead concentrate on the events of late March 1981.
James Baker, a member of Reagan's cabinet at the time, stated, "Bush is functioning much like a co-president." This after George Sr. aspired to become president by running against Reagan in the Republican primaries. Here is evidence of a desire for power, then a taste of power. On Monday, the 30th of March 1981, George Bush Sr. was in the Hotel where John F. Kennedy Jr. spent the final night of his life. Coincidence? Maybe George wanted to spend some time alone and reflect on the post-Kennedy years when he, Kissinger, and their fellow war-hawks were finally able to pass their agendas -- such as committing to war in Southeast Asia. Anyway, it was on this bizarre Monday in March that a fellow named John Hinckley Jr. shot President Reagan, lodging a bullet in his chest less than an inch from his heart. When there is an attempt to assassinate our President, isn't the Vice President the most likely suspect?
John Hinckley Jr.'s family donated substantial amounts of money to Bush during the 1980 primaries when he ran for President -- Neil Bush admitted this. Coincidence? On March 31st The Houston Post ran a story that read, "Scott Hinckley, the brother of John Hinckley Jr., who is charged with shooting President Reagan and three others, was to have been a dinner guest Tuesday night at the home of Neil Bush, son of Vice President George Bush, The Houston Chronicle has learned." As if this weren't enough evidence, Neil and John Hinckley both were proven to have lived in Lubbock, Texas in 1978 -- how many sons of energy barons just happened to live in that town? (It's appropriate to mention that Neil was implicated in the Silverado Savings and Loan scandal). As the final touch to this surreal scenario, Bush, as leader of the cabinet, came to the decision that this was not part of a domestic conspiracy! It's just like Janet Reno's investigation of wrongdoings at Waco, when she was in charge of the murders committed there! Are we to believe that the Bush family was close with the bin Ladens and the Hinckleys and that both families had a rogue member whose violent acts just happened to help advance the political careers of Bushes?
The fact that there was no investigation into these incriminating facts nearly proves that the Bush family knew of Hinckley's impending assassination attempt. George Bush Sr., you are guilty of high treason and should receive retribution for your vile lust for power.
George Bush had two other sons, named George Jr. and Jeb, and they carried on the name and traditions of the family. Let's ignore George Jr.'s, and his brother Jeb's known affiliation with Ken Lay of Enron. Why don't we look further east: from Texas to Florida. George Jr. obviously learned a valuable lesson from his father: lie, cheat, and steal your way into power. Brother Jeb, as the Governor of Florida ignored the decision of the State's Courts that ex-felons from out-of-state would retain their right to vote if they moved to Florida. (Under Florida law, and a handful of other states, an ex-felon could be stripped of his right to vote). Jeb hired a private data-mining firm, the first time a state government has done this, to compile a list of voters to be purged from Florida's register. Florida happens to be the only state in the Union to list race on the voter registration: because blacks tend to vote for Democrats (93 percent of the time nationally), between 50-100,000 mostly black voters were illegally barred from voting in the 2000 elections. George Jr. "won" the election by 537 votes. George Bush Jr. was declared the winner of the 2000 elections and became president of these United States. Do you think the two Georges may have known about Jeb's rigging of these elections? George Bush Jr. proves himself guilty of treason by the very laws he's lent his signature to. This whole administration is guilty of criminal disregard for the laws of our land by violating citizen's rights granted under the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Eighth Amendments of the Constitution. This administration has passed laws allowing infinite detention without charge or access to counsel for U.S. citizens. In these ways he has usurped the power of the Judicial and Legislative Branches and dealt a severe blow to the Constitution's Checks and Balances. He has destroyed the Fourth Amendment by removing the requirement for warrants, which could be easily attained if a Judge believed a person may be involved with terrorists.
For his blatant disregard of the freedoms which represent our nation, Bush and this administration should be impeached and tried for treason by our courts to be sentenced for their crimes. The penalties for those who represent our nation should be severe when they partake in actions detrimental to the citizens. The problem may be deeper than we realize: since treasonous criminals have the power to deem citizens "enemy combatants" and strip them of their rights, this makes violating the Constitution the rule and adherence to the Constitution a criminal act -- it has to. If criminals make the rules, those who refuse illegitimate laws will be deemed the lawbreakers. Furthermore, if we don't reaffirm our Constitution there will be no reigns on our government and they'll be able to pass any laws they wish.
Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely -- but in the case of the Bush family -- corruption empowers, and absolute corruption empowers absolutely! The roots of the Bush family tree are embedded in filth, in poison, in the abyss itself. There is apparently no offense too dishonorable to be committed by three generations of Bushes: they engaged in every sort of thievery and deceit; they conspired to commit murder; they have conspired against the American people and Constitution itself. The goal was to sell gas to the Russian markets, and link to Unocal's southern export pipeline crossing Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan.January 8, 1996: Enron and the state government of Maharashtra reached a new agreement that would shift some of the construction costs and lower the electricity tariffs.
June, 1997: As an adviser for Unocal, Zalmay Khalilzad drew up a risk analysis of a proposed gas pipeline from the former Soviet republic of Turkmenistan across Afghanistan and Pakistan to the Indian Ocean. He participated in talks and social meetings between Unocal and Taliban officials in 1997.
November 14, 1997: Enron International's CEO Rebecca Mark unveiled an energy plan that included a $300 million project to build a pipeline from Dabhol to Hazira and to the North to add 1200 km of complimentary pipeline system to the existing HBJ pipeline at a cost of $900 million.
December 7, 1997: Unocal invited a Taliban contingency to visit them in Houston, Texas, housed them in five-star hotels, dined them at the home of Unocal VP and medically treated the former foreign minister, Mullah Mohammed Ghaus before he returned home.
February 12, 1998: Testimony of John J. Maresca, vice-president, international relations, Unocal Corporation was heard by the House Committee on International Relations and the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific regarding "a proposed extension (of the proposed Trans-Caspian pipeline), would link with the SUI pipeline system, moving gas to near New Delhi, where it would connect with the existing HBJ pipeline . . ."
June 23, 1998: In a speech to the "Collateral Damage Conference" of the Cato Institute, Cheney said, "the good Lord didn't see fit to put oil and gas only where there are democratically elected regimes friendly to the United States. Occasionally we have to operate in places where, all things considered, one would not normally choose to go. But, we go where the business is."
July 29, 1998: The Department of State is pleased that Turkmen Minister of Oil and Gas Arazov announced Turkmenistan's selection of the U.S. company Enron to carry out a feasibility study funded by the Trade and Development Agency for a Trans-Caspian gas pipeline.
August 20, 1998: U.S. Tomahawk cruise missiles target Kandahar Afghanistan and sites believed to be Osama bin Laden's training camps. Shortly after, the UN imposes sanctions on Afghanistan that isolate the nation.
January 25, 1999: Human Rights Watch released a report that indicated human right violations had occurred as a result of opposition to the Dabhol Power project. Beginning in late 1996 and continuing throughout 1997, leading Indian environmental activists and representatives of villagers' organizations in the affected area organized to oppose the project and, as a direct result of their opposition, were subjected to beatings, repeated short-term detention and were not paid.
February, 1999: Joint agreement signed by Turkmenistan and two American companies, Bechtel and GE Capital Services to build a $2.5 billion Trans-Caspian pipeline, after Enron conducted a feasibility study.
November, 1999: Enron purchased 5.1 percent of the company that operates the country's sole long-distance gas pipeline, which runs from the offshore gas fields in the Bombay High area to the country's capital, New Delhi.
June-Oct 2000: Maharashtra government allies demand scrapping the project because of the cost of the power it produces.
Early 2001: Vice President Cheney held several secret meetings with top Enron officials, including its Chairman Kenneth Lay. These meetings were presumably part of Cheney's non-public Energy Task Force sessions. A number of Enron stockholders, including Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Trade Representative Robert Zoellick, became officials in the Bush administration. In addition, Thomas White, a former Vice Chairman of Enron and a multimillionaire in Enron stock, currently serves as the Secretary of the Army.
February, 2001: Vice President Cheney's energy task force changed a draft energy proposal to include a provision to boost oil and natural gas production in India. The amendment was so narrow that it apparently was targeted only to Enron's power plant in India.
March, 2001: Laila Helms, the part Afghan niece of the former CIA director and former U.S. ambassador to Tehran Richard Helms is described as the Mata-Hari of U.S.-Taliban negotiations. Ms. Helms brought Sayed Rahmatullah Hashimi, an adviser to Mullah Omar, to Washington after the Taliban had destroyed the ancient Buddhas of Bamiyan. Hashimi met the directorate of Central Intelligence at the CIA and the Bureau of Intelligence and Research at the State Department.
April, 2001: An Enron memo, which Lay gave Cheney during their one-on-one meeting, makes eight energy-policy recommendations. Seven out of eight recommendations were adopted in the administration's final energy plan.
May, 2001: A conference held at the Brookings Institution provides evidence that the exploitation of Caspian Basin and Asian energy markets was an urgent priority for the Bush administration, and the centerpiece of its energy policy.
May 17, 2001: The U.S. indirectly gives $43 million to Afghanistan's Taliban government as a reward for its efforts to stamp out opium-poppy cultivation. The same day, White House's energy policy recommended, "the president direct the Secretaries of State and Energy to work with India's Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to help India maximize its domestic oil and gas production."
June, 2001: Construction halted on the Dabhol plant.
June 27, 2001: Cheney stepped in to try to help Enron collect a $64 million debt from Dabhol. Conducted at a Washington meeting between Cheney and the leader of India's opposition, Sonia Gandhi.
June 28, 2001: "Good news" a NSC staff member wrote in a e-mail memo: "The Veep mentioned Enron in his meeting with Sonia Gandhi." An unnamed government staff member wrote that (s)he would "ask the Indians" if Kenneth Lay "is invited to the dinner" with India's national security adviser, Brajesh Mishra. The memo is part of a series uncovered by the Washington Post that revealed that the National Security Council led a "Dabhol Working Group."
June 30, 2001: Another Dabhol Working Group memo states the need to "broaden the advocacy" and recommends diplomatic action by the U.S. Embassy and the Ambassador. The memo also notes that Christina Rocca, in charge of Central Asian affairs for the U.S. government, met with a top aide to the Indian Prime Minister. The memo is marked as a "Confidential Business Communication."
August 2, 2001: The last meeting between U.S. and Taliban representatives took place five weeks before the attacks on New York and Washington, the analysts maintain. On that occasion, Christina Rocca met the Taliban ambassador to Pakistan in Islamabad.
August 27, 2001: Kenneth Lay wrote another e-mail to his employee/stockholders extolling the value of an employee stock option program, describing a "significantly higher price" the stock would bring in the near future.
September 5, 2001: Lay announces that the company will divest itself of $4-$5 billion in assets in the next two years.
September 10, 2001: "Those who control the oil routes out of Central Asia will impact all future direction and quantities of flow and the distribution of revenues from new production," wrote energy expert James Dorian in Oil and Gas Journal, published the day before the terrorist attacks.
September 14, 2001: Unocal issued the following statement: "The company is not supporting the Taliban in Afghanistan in any way whatsoever. Nor do we have any project or involvement in Afghanistan." Lay also writes to the Prime Minister of India, insisting that his $2.3 billion asking price is reasonable "compared to the size of our legal claim," which Enron placed at $5 billion.
September 19, 2001: Enron invokes a clause in its Dabhol power plant contract, claiming that because the Maharashtra State Electricity Board has violated its power purchase agreement, the Maharashtra state government and the government of India are liable for $5 billion.
October 3, 2001: Cheney meets with India External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh. The NSC sends "Dabhol talking points" to Cheney's staff.
November 1, 2001: Bush signed Executive Order 13233 which limits public access to papers of all presidents since 1980 -- including George W. Bush. Another memo written this day states that talking points for Bush were prepared for his meeting with the India Prime Minister. Bush did not discuss Enron during the meeting.
November 6, 2001: OPIC President Peter Watson contacts a top aide of the Indian Prime Minister: "The acute lack of progress in this matter has forced Dabhol to rise to the highest levels of the United States government."
November 8, 2001: Enron president Lawrence "Greg" Whalley called Treasury Undersecretary Peter Fisher in late October and disclosed that it had overstated earnings dating back to 1997 by almost $600 million. That same day, an e-mail ("Importance: High"), whose sender and recipient are blacked out, warned, "President Bush cannot talk about Dabhol."
November 9, 2001: An e-mail noted that Lawrence Lindsey, chairman of Bush's National Economic Council, had met India's National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra on Nov. 7, but it said Lindsey was "advised that he could not discuss Dabhol." Lindsey is a former Enron consultant and had served on its board of advisers.
Late November, 2001: Lay called Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill and Commerce Secretary Don Evans seeking a last-minute federal bailout and was turned down.
December 2, 2001: Enron files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
December 27, 2001: Bush Administration repealed a Clinton-era rule that prevents the government from awarding federal contracts to businesses that have broken environmental, labor, tax, civil rights or other laws.
December 31, 2001: President Bush appointed a former aide to Unocal, Afghan-born Zalmay Khalilzad, as special envoy to Afghanistan. The nomination was announced nine days after the US-backed interim government of Hamid Karzai took office in Kabul.
January 17, 2002: Enron reportedly filed an approximately $200 million claim with the U.S. government's Overseas Private Investment Corporation in an attempt to recoup losses from the Dabhol Power Corporation.
January 18, 2002: According to documents released on this date, it was noted the Bush administration intervened with top Indian officials last year in a bid to salvage the Enron project in India. The White House said the effort, involving Vice President Dick Cheney and other senior officials, was justified because the $2.9 billion Dabhol power project was financed in part through the U.S. government's Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), a taxpayer-backed agency that provides "political risk" insurance and loans to help U.S. companies invest in developing nations. The White House denied the push was influenced by Enron's political contributions.
January 28, 2002: U.S. Ambassador Robert Blackwell addresses an Indian energy industry meeting and demands India honor the "sanctity of contract" and make good on the Enron debt, warning that India's hopes for "big-time international investment" could be harmed otherwise.
February 8, 2002: Afghanistan's interim leader Hamid Karzai said he and Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf had agreed to revive a plan for a trans-Caspian gas pipeline from Turkmenistan to Pakistan.

February 20, 2002: OPIC reveals that it gave Enron $554 million in loans and $204 million in insurance. "It is easy to forget in a post-9/11 world, but Reagan began the war on terror when he first took office in January of 1981, redefining the term and thus the scope of how the government can fight it. "I know the US has always been playing catchup in its intelligence operations (often being infiltrated and manipulated by adversaries both within and without the agencies), but I have a hard time believing they can be so completely incompetent so consistently. My suspicion is they have just let much of it happen (besides sometimes directly instigating and encouraging it), so as to achieve other long range goals.
"So, as I read Bovard's encyclopedic account of abuses and failures I like to keep in mind what others have reported -- such as Ruppert's equally encyclopedic CROSSING THE RUBICON: THE DECLINE OF THE AMERICAN EMPIRE AT THE END OF THE AGE OF OIL. A good example of how both perspectives are needed is the case of Sen Paul Wellstone (D-Minn) who complained the so-called Patriot Act was being rushed through after 9/11. Bovard mentions him, but what he neglects to mention is that for this small attempt to obstruct the administration Wellstone was murdered just a little over a year later (in a highly suspicious plane crash that killed the senator, his wife, daughter and three staff members). This kind of followup is what Ruppert's account excels at. So if you keep in mind alternative accounts of what happened in places as diverse as Mena Arkansas during the Iran/Contra scandal, Ruby Ridge Idaho, Waco Texas, Oklahoma City, and the World Trade Center (twice!) then you get a fuller picture of the terror and tyranny facing America today.
"Of course a large part of the problem is how we define terrorism. 'The US definitions of terrorism focus far more on the perpetrator than the act. The same act is either public service or terrorism, depending on whether the killer is wearing a uniform.' (p. 227) So by the US government's definition a government is incapable of acts of terror (even though they kill way more of their citizens than any terrorist organization or individuals ever do), and so always on the side of 'good.' This has led to the US government bankrolling 'some of the world's most oppressive regimes.' (p. 252)
"Bovard clearly saw where all this was heading as he presciently remarked, 'The precedents the Justice Department establishes in abusing aliens will inevitably influence how the federal government treats American citizens . . . The power seized after 9/11 will be the starting line for a sprint toward greater discretionary and punitive power over anyone residing in this country.' (pg.132) He can say this with confidence because it's how the FBI habitually operated before being reigned in in 1976, and how the DOJ began treating Americans soon after 9/11 and the passage of the Patriot Act. So, while Clark is definitely writing from a biased perspective, it is an honest bias that comes from experience -- from conclusion rather than prejudice.
"What Clarke gives in his book is a valuable perspective on the intersection of intelligence and politics. This is not a 'tell all' book as we are used to seeing from former officials but is a well reasoned and fair appraisal of the inner workings of the highest levels of government. It is well written, well defended, and highly educational. Clarke confirms what many people have long suspected, that the reactionary agenda of the Bush Administration was cast by a small number of key officials and advisors before taking office. That agenda, toppling Hussein in Iraq being a major component, was dogmatically held to without regard to realities or intelligence information. One gets the distinct impression that the 9/11 attacks were seen by the administration as a boon and a justification of pre-set aims. Clarke's criticism is especially poignant when pointing to how the administration has been seeking to run a political campaign based on the tragedy of the terrorist attacks -- the same administration who cared so little about terrorism before the attacks. He is seeking to raise the alarm and tell the truth, and all but the most politically extreme will be alarmed at what Clarke reveals.

"For anyone familiar with modern social theory, it is apparent that the author's thesis is a quite clever and accurate extension of sociologist C. Wright Mills' well known notions of what came to be known as the 'mass society' theory. This was an essential aspect of Mills' famous theory of the power elite as forwarded in a book with the same title. Like social theorist G. William Domhoff ('The Higher Circles'), Professor Gross shows how the deceptively friendly and engaging style of the powers that be actually constitute an increasingly dangerous threat to the democratic process and to the long-term survival of our precious civil liberties. Of course, for Americans used to the association between the term 'fascism' and the image of angry totalitarian states such as Nazi Germany and the Italy of the same period of time, it is perhaps difficult to associate with the notion that clever and systematic manipulation of the general population through use of the mass media is a form of fascistic influence. Yet, as Gross argues so persuasively, that is exactly what it is.

We find ourselves constantly bombarded by powerful and suggestive images, message-laden icons which deliver consistent themes regarding the nature of the environment we are living in, one we come to employ more and more exclusively as our preferred method of interacting in both the civil and legal aspects of contemporary society. As Professor Gross so prophetically forecasted, the mergers of all commercial news sources, both electronic and other, have come under the ownership and control of corporate America, one of the leading edges of the power elite. Amazingly, all of this also rings a responsive chord with the single most prophetic work of fiction in the 20th century, Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World." Lost in our petty diversions and self-absorbed in a pool of trivial pursuits, we become increasingly more vulnerable to the solid wall of subliminal and other messages all conveying a message regarding he nature of the world and our social, economic, and political place in it.
As our experience with the several successful Presidents ranging from Ronald Reagan to George W. "Hightower defines 'Kleptocrat Nation' as 'a body of people ruled by thieves . . . a government characterized by the practice of transferring money and power from the many to the few . . . [and] a ruling class of moneyed elites that usurps liberty, justice, sovereignty, and other, democratic rights from the people.' His catalogue of corporate greed and governmental complicity is breathtaking in scope, and though he admits that the fusion of business and government is not new, he persuasively states that 'never have so few done so much for so few.' "Controversy is breeding cinematic greatness this year as Michael Moore's 'Fahrenheit 9/11,' along with Mel Gibson's 'The Passion of the Christ,' pushes the envelope on intelligent and thought-provoking American film-making. This is a documentary feature (I think arguably the finest of all time) that pulls no punches as Moore dives into the George W. Bush administration head-first like a heat-seeking missile with only one objective -- find and destroy. Moore started a stir after he won the Best Documentary Feature Oscar for 'Bowling for Columbine' in 2002 as he bashed the current White House president in a wild, daring and chaotic speech that sent shockwaves even through Hollywood (not exactly Bush country to start with). 'Fahrenheit 9/11' is supposedly a justification to Moore's public views. The movie is a blazing powder keg as an unbelievable amount of research, archive footage and Moore's unchallenged brand of getting in the face of the man and the system the man represents extends throughout the picture's running time. A political nightmare in 2000 took place as the presidential election came down to Florida where wrongdoing and possible voter fraud occurred. Things went from bad to worse as President Bush's excessive vacation time in Crawford, Texas is questioned and then of course that fateful day in September of 2001 changed the nation and the world forever. Fear, in Moore's eyes, dominates the administration as they do their best to keep the general public scared with mixed signals and messages. The thin red line then comes into play as George W. Bush and Tony Blair's role in Iraq becomes skewed with that of Saddam Hussein. Why attack Iraq? What about Osama bin Laden's relatives that fled the U.S. shortly after the New York terrorist attacks? And how did they even get a flight when air transportation was supposedly shut down? Was Iraq the real threat? Can the Taliban even be tracked down? What about Middle Eastern/U.S. affairs with the oil of the world? The questions are not easily answered as Moore paints a portrait of a dizzying web network where nothing is quite as simple or clear as it seems. Is anyone in Washington, D.C. any help? Well they do not even seem able to read bills that are passed. And who suffers? Not the rich and powerful. It is those in places like Flint, Michigan, a place where the poverty rate is staggering and where unemployment is near 50 percent in some areas. Who takes advantage? Try pesky military recruiters who chase down poor white people and economically down-trodden minorities shamelessly like old time evangelists or medicine men. And as it has always been those with so little fight for those with so much. And is anyone willing to do like the Almighty and sacrifice their own offspring for something they believe in? Moore is not shy at all. The movie does its best to explain and educate all viewers, even those who do not want to hear or see. All angles are covered and all corners swept. Bush's unsuccessful business career gets a glimpse. His closest advisers (Dick Cheney, Colin Powell, Donald Rumsfeld, Colon Powell and many others) are shown at their very worst through seemingly endless news items. The film gets emotional as Moore finds a middle-class family in his hometown who has suffered the loss of one of their children. Pro-Bush people turn on a dime as the economy and unsubstantiated war force many fence-sitters to re-think their political beliefs. 'Fahrenheit 9/11' is an anti-war picture at its finest. I always think back to the 1930 version of 'All Quiet on the Western Front' when the primary character (played by Lew Ayres) states that there is no glory in dying for your country. He believes that when your choices are to die with honor or live that the only logical choice is the latter. Moore has very similar outlooks in this day and age of international chaos. This movie could be discussed for days and days and the major points would never be touched upon. Moore, like him or not, is an amazing talent as his visions and the way he executes them are truly something remarkable to behold. To write a critical statement of 'Fahrenheit 9/11' does not really do this project justice. It is near impossible to express the brilliance of this important and intelligent movie. 5 stars out of 5." -- A registered user of

"In defiance of world opinion and the UN Security Council -- but with the support of the U.S. Congress -- the Bush administration invaded Iraq in March 2003. A year later it's still too soon to evaluate the success of the mission.
"A few quick judgments, though, certainly can be made. The liberation was not the cakewalk that Rumsfeld, Cheney, and Wolfowitz had predicted, and the promised liberation has turned into a woeful occupation. Moreover, regime change and preventive war in Iraq cannot be chalked up as victories in the administration's much-vaunted war on terrorism. Before the invasion there existed no ties between the Hussein government and the al Qaeda terrorist network, but a year of U.S. occupation has sparked a wave of anti-American Islamic militancy in Iraq. Osama bin Laden and his terrorist band were never favored or sheltered by the secular Ba'athist regime in Iraq, and bin Laden remains at large. Meanwhile, the Taliban and its ilk are resurgent in occupied Afghanistan."

"Developments just prior to and immediately after the bailout illuminate interesting political and potentially ominous market realities. The political reality is that George W. Bush, unlike his father, is most likely a Morgan man. Press reports indicate that 'W' himself was involved in these transactions. Comparing the transactions shows that Morgan received the federal 800-pound gorilla's unbridled support whereas federal coercion in the Citi-Wachovia transaction was, by comparison, restrained. In 'facilitating' the JP Morgan -- WaMu deal, the FDIC first wrestled WaMu to ground, executing a midnight foreclosure and repossession of all its assets. The FDIC then sold WaMu's $302 billion in assets to Morgan for $1.9 billion and wiped out the WaMu equity holders, including a group that had invested $7 billion six months ago. Monday JP Morgan further announced that had no intention of hiring or retaining WaMu management. Wachovia was just the latest bone thrown to JP Morgan.
"In another federally 'facilitated' transaction, on March 17, 2008 JP Morgan acquired global securities giant Bear Stearns for $236 million, or $2 a share. After shareholders complained, JP Morgan increased its 'offer' fivefold, to $10 per share. In February of 2008, Bear Stearns stock had a market value $93 per share. Citi, by comparison, has not received the same level of government support. In the Citi-Wachovia transaction, the FDIC did not actually seize Wachovia's assets. It only threatened to seize Wachovia's assets, allowed Wachovia to survive as a legal entity and gave Wachovia until December 31 to close the deal with Citi. If 'W' is not a Morgan man, then he is not a good negotiator, because the delay has opened the door for Wachovia to negotiate a better deal."

"Washington -- The leader of the world's 1 billion Roman Catholics has been to the White House only once in history. That changes this week, and President Bush is pulling out all the stops: driving out to a suburban military base to meet Pope Benedict XVI's plane, bringing a giant audience to the South Lawn and hosting a fancy East Room dinner.
"These are all firsts.
"A crowd of up to 12,000 is due at the White House on Wednesday morning for the pope's official, pomp-filled arrival ceremony. It will feature the U.S. and Holy See anthems, a 21-gun salute, and the U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps. Both men will make remarks before their Oval Office meeting and a send-off for his Popemobile down Pennsylvania Avenue.
"The president explained the special treatment -- particularly the airport greeting.
" 'One, he speaks for millions. Two, he doesn't come as a politician; he comes as a man of faith,' Bush told the EWTN Global Catholic Network in an interview aired Friday. He added that he wanted to honor Benedict's conviction that 'there's right and wrong in life, that moral relativism has a danger of undermining the capacity to have more hopeful and free societies. . . .' "An advocate for constitutional government says activist judges could be dealt a fatal blow if Congress would follow its mandate and use the authority granted to the legislature by the Constitution to keep the courts in check. Many conservatives feel that liberal judges who make law rather than interpret the Constitution have been leading an assault on the traditional values on which America was founded. But Howard Phillips of the Conservative Caucus says that could all end if the U.S. Congress would act. 'Article Three gives Congress the power to abolish every federal court except the Supreme Court, and to limit the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court,' he says. He goes on to explain that this empowers Congress to prevent the courts by statute from ruling against the public display of the Ten Commandments, the inclusion of 'one nation under God' in the Pledge of Allegiance, prayer in schools, and similar religious freedom and freedom of expression issues. Phillips says these rights are guaranteed. 'You don't need a Constitutional Amendment -- it's in the Constitution.'
